Student Drop Off and Pick Up

A reminder to parents/guardians to not stop or park in the bus lanes in front of the school.  Please drop off across the street or on the side streets adjacent to the school.   Thank you for keeping the front bus lanes open and cleared for the 7-bus fleet that transports our students.

Demographic Forms

Demographic forms are due! The deadline for demographic forms was September 15, 2025.  If you have not completed these please do so as soon as possible.  They are in your SchoolEngage account, which is accessed through your MyCBE account. If you so not see the form, please notify the office and we can make sure one is assigned.

Cross Country

Congrats to the Legends cross country team for a great season.  Although this season is short and fast paced, the team had a fantastic turnout. We encourage students to keep the momentum going and focus on interval training post season. As the weather was amazing for all our meets, the Oct 1st rainout date is not needed. Students can see their photo finishes on display this week and we look forward to team pictures.

-Thanks, from your coaches- Ms. Foster, Ms. Rose and Ms. Litwin.

Athletics

We are excited to announce an opportunity for any grade 6 & 7 student to participate in a Basketball Development Team. Ms. Fenton will be running a practice every Friday from 12:45pm - 1:45pm. This team will focus on improving and practicing fundamental skills, game strategy and teamwork. Any grade 6 & 7 student can join, there is no tryout process.

Senior girls' basketball will host our first home games on Thursday Oct 2.

Please note the following spectator policy for all home games:

  • MHS students will be allowed to watch the first game of the night at 4:30. When that game concludes, if they are not with a parent/guardian they must leave the building.
  • Students from other schools will not be granted access to MHS and our gym unless they are accompanied by a parent/guardian. If accompanied by a parent/guardian, they may enter the gym, with the parent/guardian, to watch your school compete.
  • Please note:
    • They are to remain in the gym unless, using the washroom.
    • They are to cheer in a positive manner.
    • The child leaves when the parent/guardian leaves.
    • Non-student spectators who are dropped off will not be given access to the building.
  • Inappropriate behaviour by non-students/athletes will be addressed by school admin.  If it occurs a second time, the non-student athlete and their parent/guardian will be directed to leave.
  • Depending on the issue, a trespass warning may be issued to that student.
  • Inappropriate behaviour by a parent/guardian/family member will be addressed immediately by school admin.  If it occurs a second time, the game will be stopped, and the parent/guardian/family member will be directed to leave the gym and the school.  If they refuse and/or cause an issue – your team will forfeit the game.
  • Depending on the issue, a trespass warning may be issued to that parent/guardian/family member.

Terry Fox Day

Our annual Terry Fox run will take place on Friday October 3. For the first time, we will be running in the community and around the pond. We look forward to a great run!

McKenzie Highlands will be participating in our annual Terry Fox Day and Run next Friday. We are excited to announce that the Pate Family Foundation has agreed to match 100% of our fundraising efforts.

Considering this, Mr. Jones, along with an MHS student, has agreed to shave his head if we can raise $3000 or more.

Also, the Pate Family Foundation has donated two front-row tickets to the Flames vs. Sharks game on November 13. Tickets will be on sale for $1 per ticket, in the main atrium, at lunch, until Wednesday. Second prize is a pizza party for the winner's homeroom. All proceeds for the raffle will of course go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Donations can be made at the school in homerooms leading up to October 3, or by following this link to the school's fundraising page:

Online donations are a little slow now, so your help is greatly needed.

Thanks everyone for participating in this amazing cause!

Clubs

Next week we will start our yo-yo club.  Students of all levels are welcome.  So, whether they are learning how to rock the cradle or walk the dog, or simply practicing their return, there’s a space for everyone at our club.  Students who have their own yo-yos are encouraged to bring their own from home, but there will also be some available here to use while in the LC.

Monday and Tuesday- No school for students

Wednesday- Grades 4 and 6

Thursday- Grades 5, 7, 8 and 9.

Fun Fact:  The name “yo-yo” comes from the northern Philippine Ilokano language word “yóyo.” It means “come-come.”

Genre of the Month

Next week will be our last week of highlighting friendship fiction.  This week we share a book with you that combines a sport theme with the anxieties that come from being in a new school with new friends.

New Kid by Tim Green:  Tommy Rust is a pro at being the new kid. So, when his dad marches onto his baseball field, he knows that time is up. In his new town, he goes by the name Brock, and he's having a hard time fitting in. And being friends with the bully from the wrong side of the tracks isn't helping.  (recommended by ULS for grades 4 through 7).
