Precautions for the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8
On Monday, April 8, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m.
We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.
During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, under direction of the Calgary Board of Education, we have been directed that all students are to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child.
With all students staying for lunch, the cafeteria may be overrun with purchases so we highly encourage students to bring a lunch. If students are not participating in educational activities around the event, schools may choose to have students will be involved in supervised indoor activities.
If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse.
During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.
Open House
Both current and prospective students are welcome to come on by to see and hear about the vision and school programming we have in place at McKenzie Highlands School. We will start in the main gym at 6:00 pm on April 24 for a brief overview and then open up the school for tours and classroom presentations.
We are really looking forward to this event and hope to see you there!
Screenagers Parent Night
Let’s Talk About Social Media and Electronic Devices!
If you want to learn more about social media and the effects on adolescents, we are offering a parent viewing of Screenagers on Thursday, April 25, 6:30 pm in the school gym (not 6 pm as previously advertised). This viewing is designed to educate parents about social media and electronic device usage. We will start with some McKenzie Highlands School insights, launch into the viewing and have informal time afterward for questions and conversation. Students in grades 7-9 are concurrently viewing and working on a student version of Screenagers in Health class.
We are also extending an invitation to parents of McKenzie Towne School, recognizing this is an important topic on the minds of parents and educators.

Book Highlights: During April, our LC will be highlighting books from our “Personal Struggles” section. These books have characters in them that are going through some real-life issues. Topics include struggles such as racism, cultural differences, mental health issues, physical limitations and identity. What value do these books have? This genre of books can allow the reader to choose a book whose main character they can relate to and possibly help the reader feel less alone in their struggles. Conversely, if the character is one whose issues are not relatable to the reader, they will usually gain some insight and empathy along the way.
