School Lunches

We are asking parents to make sure that your students have a packed lunch for school with them.  Yesterday we went through 40+ subsidized lunches, which we try to reserve for students in need.  We are finding that a lot of our older students are ‘sleeping in’ or ‘forgetting’ and then going to the cafeteria for a free lunch.  We don’t have the funds to sustain giving out this many lunches for students who aren’t taking the responsibility to bring their own lunches.  Thank you for working with your students on this matter!

Co-ed Touch Football Team

For the first time ever, McKenzie Highlands will be having a Coed Touch Football team.

Tryouts for the football team will be starting next week, Tuesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 25 from 3:30 to 4:45pm on our school soccer field. All Students from grades 6-9 are welcome to tryout next week.  We will be having two teams, a Junior team (Grades 6/7/8) and a Senior team (Grades 8/9).

Please be prepared to tryout next week.

We are excited for the upcoming Coed Touch Football season and are looking forward to seeing all athletes at tryouts.

If you have any questions, please talk to one of the coaches - Mr. Lam, Mr. Arnott or Mr. Burden.

Open House

Both current and prospective students are welcome to come on by to see and hear about the vision and school programming we have in place at McKenzie Highlands School.  We will start in the main gym at 6:00 pm on April 24 for a brief overview and then open up the school for tours and classroom presentations.

We are really looking forward to this event and hope to see you there!

Screenagers Parent Night

Let’s Talk About Social Media and Electronic Devices!

If you want to learn more about social media and the effects on adolescents, we are offering a parent viewing of Screenagers on Thursday, April 25, 6:30 pm in the school gym.  This viewing is designed to educate parents about social media and electronic device usage.  We will start with some McKenzie Highlands School insights, launch into the viewing and have informal time afterward for questions and conversation.  Students in grades 7-9 are concurrently viewing and working on a student version of Screenagers in Health class.

We are also extending an invitation to parents of McKenzie Towne School, recognizing this is an important topic on the minds of parents and educators.

Learning Commons News

Book Highlights:  Does your child enjoy feeling in control of how a story evolves.  Perhaps they get frustrated at the bad choices characters often make.  If so, they will love alternate ending fiction.  In these books the reader is stopped periodically and can decide which direction the character wishes to take.  Depending on their answer, they will be directed to a different page to continue the story.  Choose Your Own Adventure books have been around for decades, but with new collections in this genre popping up in recent years, they have gained a resurgence in popularity.  Using parent council funds, we were able to add to our collection with new titles that place students in the heart of historical disasters such as the 1865 Sultana Disaster, science fiction themed situations involving aliens and asteroids, and even literature based scenarios.  Would you survive living “20 000 leagues under the sea”?   Maybe it is time to find out!

Grade 6 Take Action Fair

The grade 6 Take Action Fair will take place on Thursday, April 25. Grade 6 students will be presenting their hard work supporting causes that are important to them and are looking forward to sharing their work with the school and McKenzie Towne community. There will be a variety of games and items to purchase at the fair to raise money for various causes. Students will be visiting the fair throughout the day, and families and community members of grade 6 students are welcome to come during the community visiting hour of 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM.

Tickets to play games, purchase treats, and other items will be sold to students in advance the week of the fair, from Monday, April 22 to Wednesday, April 24. Families/community visitors will be able to buy tickets at the fair on the April 25. Cash is required. Each ticket will cost $1, and students will be selling items that range in price from $1 to $3.

All proceeds will be donated to the organizations being supported by students.

Grade 9 Market

The Grade 9 Market will be held at McKenzie Highlands School on Thursday May 16. The grade 9’s will be using their knowledge from Math and Social to create a business plan, market for a product, survey, calculate costs, and sell a product. We will be in the gymnasium and outside throughout the day selling items to all members of MHS. The total amount made at the Market will go towards the grade 9 farewell.

The Fashion Department is looking for second hand denim donations

Send your dusty denim to our Fashion Department! This spring in Fashion, we are channeling our creativity and sewing skills into an upcycling project called, How Green Are Your Jeans?

We are looking to collect lots of used clean denim items for this project, as grade 7 students will be participating in designing and fabricating upcycled denim.

Please drop off your clean denim donations to the office.
