We are still awaiting our Big Mountain spirit wear order.  We will let you know as soon as the order has arrived.  Thank you for your patience!

School Fees

As we are approaching November we are sending a reminder to parents to make sure all school fees are paid using MyCBE, or with cash or debit in the main office.

There are some cost recovery projects starting very soon in our option courses and students with outstanding fees may need to participate in paper based format, if fees have not been paid and/or we have not heard from you.  Enrichment/consumable supplies and materials are purchased for students as fees are received.  Families experiencing financial difficulty need to apply for a CBE fee waiver and upon completing the waiver to reach out to the school principal.

How to apply for a fee waiver

We want all of our students to participate in enrichment opportunities, please reach out if needed so we can work together.  Please know that fees can be paid in instalments to support families juggling financial demands.

Calgary Bridge Foundation:  After School Program at MHS for First and Second Generation Immigrant Students

Integrating into Canadian culture doesn’t end at the last school bell — give yourself a chance to develop outside of school hours from November to May. By participating in afterschool programs, you’ll make friends, improve your English language skills, participate in fun games and activities and have an opportunity to grow in a safe, supportive space.

Through lesson plans, field trips, guest speakers and public community events, the Afterschool Program looks to connect you to different resources and information about Canada. Our goal is to help each student achieve personal success and increase your participation in both your school and community.

When:  Wednesdays at 3:30 – 5:30pm (November 20 – May)

Where: McKenzie Highlands School

Cost: $20 for the entire year

Remembrance Day

Hello! Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be taking place on Thursday, November 7th this year.  Parents/guardians are invited to the Remembrance Day Assembly.

If you have photographs of relatives who fought in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Cold War, the war in Afghanistan and any other conflicts or ongoing peacekeeping missions that we could include them in our slideshow, it would be most appreciated!

If you'd like to have your relative included, please email us a picture (or pictures) of them and include a short description about where and when they served, any accomplishments or medals received, and any other important information about them. Please also let us know the student and class that they are connected to in our school.

You can send your pictures and information to Angela Rose at aerose@cbe.ab.ca or Karen Porterfield at klporterfield@cbe.ab.ca. The deadline for this is Monday, November 4th. Thanks so much for your support!

Lunch Club News

Next week we will start our yoyo club.  Students are welcome to bring yoyos from home, but we will also have plenty available for student use.   If students are interested in purchasing one for themselves, please know that there are two types.  “Responsive” yoyos are the traditional type that come back up easily, whereas “Unresponsive” yoyos will not come back up but instead simply spin at the bottom.  Unresponsive yoyos are the type that the students like using for tricks, such as “walking the dog” and “rocking the cradle”.  So if your child is interested in learning some tricks and wants their own yoyo, you may wish to keep this in mind.

Please note that the days for our lunch club are now as follows:

Mondays:  Grades 5

Tuesdays: Grade 6

Wednesdays: Grade 4

Thursdays: Grade 7-9

Book Highlights

During November, we will be highlighting historical fiction and non-fiction.  Below are some popular war-themed novels that remind us of the sacrifices others have made and the hardships that war brings.

War Stories by Gordon Korman:  A story of telling truth from lies -- and finding out what being a hero really means.

Allies by Alan Gratz:  Alan Gratz, bestselling author of Refugee, weaves a stunning array of voices and stories into an epic tale of teamwork in the face of tyranny -- and how just one day can change the world.

The Grand Escape:  The Greatest Prison Breakout of the 20th Century by Neal Bascomb (recommended for grades 7 & up):  Neal Bascomb, author of The Nazi Hunters, returns with his next thrilling work of narrative nonfiction about a group of Allied POWs who staged an escape for the ages during World War I.

The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe (recommended for grades 8 & up):  Based on the experience of real-life Auschwitz prisoner Dita Kraus, journalist Antonio Iturbe tells the incredible story of a girl who risked her life to keep the magic of books alive during the Holocaust.
