School CouncilOur school has been given another incredible opportunity to host a casino event! This fundraiser makes a huge difference — helping us purchase new books, classroom resources, school improvements, and bring in amazing guest speakers for our students. We’d love your help! Volunteers are essential to making this event a success, and everyone is welcome to join in. No Police Clearance is needed for casino volunteers, so even if you haven’t completed one yet, you can still get involved and make an impact! Did you know:

EdThis week we welcomed students back and focused on settling back into routines and expectations while enjoying some activity. A reminder that all students need appropriate indoor athletic footwear. Grades 7 & 8 are required to change into MHS gym strip shirts (or Legends Team gear) and grade 9s are required to change into athletic gear. We will begin our new modules on Monday, students should check the schedule and be prepared for the weather, if they are outside. We will forward more information about Athletics as it becomes available. Learning Commons:Clubs:This week our lunch club made spooky silhouettes for our LC windows, next week we will continue with our yo-yo club. All students are welcome on their designated grade day. This club will continue until the end of November.
Scholastics Book Fair:Our book fair which was originally scheduled for this week has been moved to February. Further details to follow. Genre of the Month:During the first two weeks of November we will continue with our scary books. Whether your child likes a mild scare or one which requires courageous page turning, there are books for all levels of goosebumps on the scare-o-meter. Here are three of our well-loved favourites: The Unfinished by Cheryl Isaacs (recommended for grades 7 & up)- In this debut YA horror novel by Cheryl Isaacs (Mohawk), small-town athlete Avery is haunted by the black water and Unfinished beings of Kanyen'kehá:ka stories and must turn to the culture she hasn't felt connected to in order to save her town. The Thirteenth Cat (recommended for grades 4 and up) by Mary Downing Hahn: Zoey spends her summer with her aunt and becomes intrigued by her reclusive neighbor, Miss Dupree, and her 13 cats. After Zoey rescues one of the cats, whom she names Nia, Miss Dupree becomes furious, and Zoey and her new friend Lila realize the neighbor may be a witch. The girls find themselves in a dangerous magical predicament, and with the help of Miss Dupree's niece, they must work to break the spell cast upon them. The Spider and The Fly by Mary Howitt: “Will you walk into my parlor? said the spider to the fly” is one of the most recognizable first lines in all English verse. But do you have any idea how the age-old tale of the spider and the fly ends? This beautiful picture book, illustrated in the style of classic horror movies from the 1920’s shines a spotlight on Mary Howitt’s warning, written to her own children about those who hide sweet words to hide not-so-sweet intentions. Author quote of the month:"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.'' -- Joseph Addison Terry FoxMcKenzie Highlands participated in our annual Terry Fox Day and Run on Friday October 3. The goal was to raise $3000 or more for the Terry Fox Foundation, and we are delighted to say that our online donations, in-school donations, staff t-shirt sales, Flames ticket raffle, and matching from the Pate Family Foundation brought our total contribution to over $5200 . A huge thank you to everyone who participated and donated. It was a lot of fun for an amazing cause!
