Book Highlights

During November, we will be highlighting historical fiction.  Not only do these novels help the students to understand some of the facts surrounding significant events in world history, but they can also help students develop a deeper understanding of the emotions and the day-to-day complexities of living during these times.

Here are some award-winning titles that our school has to offer…

You Bring the Distant Near by Mitali Perkins:  Five girls.  Three generations.  One great American love story. (Recommended for grades 7 & up)

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson:   In vivid poems, Woodson shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement.

Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm:   It's 1935 and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce. Eleven-year-old Turtle is sent to Key West, Florida to live with relatives she's never met.  She finds herself coming out of the shell she's spent her life building, and as she does, her world opens up in the most unexpected ways.

One Came Home by Amy Timberlake:  In the town of Placid, Wisconsin, 1871, Georgie blurts out something she shouldn't and her older sister Agatha flees with a pack of "pigeoners" trailing the passenger pigeon migration. When the sheriff returns to town with an unidentifiable body—wearing Agatha's blue-green ball gown—everyone assumes the worst. Except Georgie. Refusing to believe the facts that are laid down before her, Georgie sets out on a journey to find her sister on the Western frontier.
