School Council | September 22

We hope to see new parents at our upcoming School Council meeting on Monday, September 22 at 6:30 pm.  We run timely and informative meetings that focus on supporting enrichment opportunities for students, providing input into school planning, and fundraising to allow MHS to optimize opportunities for students.  We hope to see you at our next meeting. Thank you to the Council for supporting our Meet the Teacher this week.

Cross Country Meet | September 22

There will be a Cross Country Meet at North Glenmore Park at 4:40-6:00 pm. See you there!

Athletics

The Cross Country team competed in their first meet at North Glenmore and both soccer teams kicked off their seasons against MidSun. Basketball league games begin next week for junior girls and senior boys. We’re off to a great start and look forward to cheering on our Legends!

We are excited to announce an opportunity for any Grade 6 & 7 student to participate in a Basketball Development Team. Ms. Fenton will be running a practice every Friday from 12:45pm - 1:45pm. This team will focus on improving and practicing fundamental skills, game strategy and teamwork. Any grade 6 & 7 student can join, there is no tryout process.

*Please note that due to new legislation, all female athletes 12 years of age and older are required to fill out and return the "Fairness in Sport" form to be eligible to participate on a team. Students can see the Phys. Ed team if they need a form.

Phys.Ed

Students participated in their first Phys. Ed module this week and will begin a new activity on Monday. Students need appropriate footwear for inside and outdoors. All grade 7-9 students should now be changing for PE. Grades 7 & 8 are expected to wear MHS issued gym strip or any Legends team gear. Please contact Brandi Fenton - bjhislop@cbe.ab.ca if there are financial concerns.

Terry Fox Day

McKenzie Highlands will be participating in our annual Terry Fox Day and Run on Friday October 2 this year. We are excited to announce that the Pate Family Foundation has agreed to match 100% of our fundraising efforts. In light of this, Mr. Jones, along with a MHS student, has agreed to shave his head if we can raise $3000 or more.

As well, the Pate Family Foundation has donated two front-row tickets to the Flames vs. Sharks game on November 13. Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1 per ticket, in the main atrium, at lunch, for the next two weeks. All proceeds from the raffle will of course go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Donations can be made at the school in homerooms leading up to October 2, or by following this link to the school's fundraising page: https://schools.terryfox.ca/98265

Thanks everyone for participating in this amazing cause!

Learning Commons

Our learning commons has had a lot of enthusiastic readers through our doors this past three weeks. Students are slowly getting the word that we are open for lunchbreak clubs, and it was great to see so many parents wander through the LC during our open house. Thanks for popping in to say "hello"!

This week I would like to introduce families to a resource I have put together to allow students to find great book recommendations that fit their reading preferences.  Below is a link to our “Favourite Book Finder”.  Students can access this from school or from home.  They answer a series of fun questions, which leads them to one out of just over a hundred book lists that matches with their responses and age levels.  Within each list students will see a short synopsis and opening lines  of the novel.  All the books on the lists are available at our school.  Please click on the link below to give it a try!
