Basketball Court
The new basketball court is open to the community as of last week and is getting a lot of use. As we await a new sign, please remind your children that scooters and bikes are not permitted on the basketball court as it creates tire tread marks that are difficult to remove. Thank you.
School Council
We hope to see new parents at our upcoming School Council meeting on Monday, September 22 at 6:30 pm. We run timely and informative meetings that focus on supporting enrichment opportunities for students, providing input into school planning, and fundraising to allow MHS to optimize opportunities for students. We hope to see you at our next meeting. Thank you to the Council for supporting our Meet the Teacher this week.
Athletics
Soccer and basketball teams will be finalized next week as league games begin third week of September. Cross Country will continue to meet Wednesdays at lunch to practice for their first meet on Sept. 16.
*Please note that due to new provincial legislation, all female athletes age 12 and up are required to fill out and return the "Fairness in Sport" form to be eligible to participate on a team. Students can see the Phys. Ed team if they need a form.
Phys.Ed
We have begun to settle into routines and all Grades 7,8 & 9 students have begun changing into their gym strip. Next week, we begin our regular modular rotation where students will be participating in one activity for the week with their class. All Grade 4-9 students are expected to have appropriate athletic footwear - crocs, sandals, boots and slippers will not be permitted. Students will be participating in activities inside and outside so we encourage them to come prepared for the weather. Thank you for your cooperation and support in having our students participate safely.
Reminder that gym strip can be purchased from the PE department with cash or through PowerSchool. Grades 7 & 8 are expected to wear MHS issued gym strip or any Legends team gear.
T-Shirt: $15
Shorts: $20 (optional)
Terry Fox Day
McKenzie Highlands will be participating in our annual Terry Fox Day and Run on Friday October 2 this year. We are excited to announce that the Pate Family Foundation has agreed to match 100% of our fundraising efforts.
In light of this, Mr. Jones, along with a MHS student, has agreed to shave his head if we can raise $3000 or more.
As well, the Pate Family Foundation has donated two front-row tickets to the Flames vs. Sharks game on November 13. Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1 per ticket, in the main atrium, at lunch, for the next two weeks. All proceeds from the raffle will of course go to the Terry Fox Foundation.
Donations can be made at the school in homerooms leading up to October 2, or by following this link to the school's fundraising page: https://schools.terryfox.ca/98265
Thanks everyone for participating in this amazing cause!
Meet The Teacher
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Meet the Teacher. Special thanks to our grade 09 leadership students who did an exceptional job, serving up 1100+ hot dogs.
Learning Commons
Clubs
Our learning commons will be running clubs again this year. Throughout the year on the students’ designated grade day, students can come in during the second half of lunch break to read, play with Lego or play board games with their friends. During the months below we also have the extra activities noted. All are welcome
Mondays: Grade 4 students
Tuesdays: Grade 5 students
Wednesdays: Grade 6 students
Thursdays: Grade 7, 8 and 9 students
Extra Activities
October and November: Yo-yo club
December: Learn to knit or crochet
January- February: Paper airplane club
Early February: Valentine craft
March: Chess Club
April: Poetry Club with a recital at Open House for those interested.
May and June: Spy Games. This is a club for those who love solving riddles. Students can work in partners or small groups to try to solve the series of puzzles that week (like that of an escape room). If they can open the spy case with the correct combination at the end, they may earn a sweet treat.
Genre of the Month
With the excitement and nervous energy of back-to-school, it seems fitting that the genre of the month is Friendship Fiction. In these books the students read about students who are trying to fit in or are experiencing some friendship drama. Books are a wonderful way to gain understanding that we all have very similar feelings. Below is one of our popular titles.
Best Friend Next Door by Carolyn Mackler: Hannah’s best friend has just moved away. Now Emma lives there. The girls are alike in many ways, but they’re also very different. Is this the perfect friendship…or a recipe for disaster? (recommended for grades 4 and up)
Author Quote of the Week:
“Life’s a car ride…..sometimes it’s cruise control down smooth highways. Other times it’s potholes on rural roads.” - Carolyn Mackler
Upcoming ENVOE Trips

September 22 & 24 – Pocaterra, Rawson Lake, Baldy Pass Kananaskis

Have a wonderful weekend.
