Lunch Club News

Would your child be interested in learning how to draw in manga style? Would they like to make their own graphic novel or comic?  Throughout May students are welcome to come to the LC lunch club and give their art and story writing skills a little practice.   As always, students are always welcome to play board games or read instead.

The grade breakdown for our lunch club is as follows, and takes place during the second half of lunch break:

Mondays: Grades 5

Tuesdays: Grade 6

Wednesdays: Grade 4

Thursdays: Grades 7-9

Highlight of the Month- Graphic Novels

Many believe that graphic novels are only a temporary stepping stone for students as they make their way towards appreciating more traditional novels.  While it's true that they can engage a reluctant reader, this is merely one advantage.   There are many benefits to reading graphic novels that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Developing Vocabulary - Simply because a graphic novel can have less writing, this does not mean that the level of vocabulary is always easier.  In fact, one could argue that the choice of text is even more important to the author of a graphic novel, as they must be more efficient with their words.

Classics are movie appealing - It is not every student who would be drawn to pick up a copy of Pride and Prejudice or Frankenstein in their original format.  However, with the adaptation of a graphic novel, students can get a taste of these classics.

Visual Literacy - There is great benefit to learning how to interpret images. With graphic novels students are forced to decipher and interpret images as they are often necessary to understanding the plot development or character nuances.   Visual and verbal literacy are continually working together.

They’re fun! - Graphic novels are available in so many genres now.  Whether your child seeks a familiar funny comic like Garfield, a mystery such as Enola Holmes or a graphic memoir of someone with real struggles like The Ribbon Skirt by Cameron Mukwa, there is something for everyone.

Author quote of the week: “Nothing prevents boredom like a good book” - Dav Pilkey, author of Dog Man series.
