Principal Message

Stampede Breakfast

Families of MHS are welcome to join us for a complimentary Stampede Breakfast on May 20, which is graciously being provided by the Calgary Stampede Breakfast Committee.

We expect to start serving at approximately 8:45 and conclude at 10:00 am. Turkey sausages, that are halal and gluten free, will be served as well as pancakes, which will contain eggs, dry milk and flour.  Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate any dietary restrictions beyond this, so please be so kind as to pack a snack for your child if needed so that we can all enjoy food and festivity on the morning of May 20.

Special thanks to the Stampede Committee for considering MHS and bringing this to our school community.

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative and School Events

Congratulations to all of our grade 9 students for their outstanding presentations on Calgary based charities as part of our Youth and Philanthropy Initiative.  The finals were yesterday, and the Calgary Reads grade 9 student team comprised of Emma, Kennedy, Dinanga and Berlynn took first place! Their charitable organization will receive $5000 to support their community programming.  Congratulations and well done, grade 9!

Our CTF students had a fantastic work experience field trip at SAIT this week and our grade 7 students are beyond excited to be attending Outdoor School next week.  Best of luck to our Badminton teams as they compete in Divisionals!

PATs

Provincial Achievement Tests are coming soon, and we will be preparing tutorial schedules and study guides to help our students prepare and do their best in the coming weeks.  We believe in a school culture of high expectations and thank our parent community for placing value in this as well.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. Martin

Week Ahead in Athletics

Badminton season has wrapped up for our grade 7-9 students, with grade six athletes having their divisional meet on May 14 and 15 at McKenzie Highlands School at 4:30pm. Grade 8 & 9 students will have their badminton wrap up party on May 13 and the Grades 6 & 7 wrap up party is on May 20 during lunch.

We will be starting Track & Field in our Physical Education program May 12, and it will run through to May 27. Students can prepare for this by having proper footwear and water bottles for class, as we will be going outside during class time. Teams will be made through PE classes, with successful athletes participating at the Foothills Athletic Park on June 10.

Any questions around track & field, feel free to contact Blake Irvine in the PE department at bmirvine@cbe.ab.ca

Highlight of the Month - Graphic Novels

Our graphic novel collection covers all genres.  Here are some of our new titles that are about characters overcoming personal struggles.

Alterations by Ray Xu:   Kevin Lee lives in a crowded Toronto apartment above the family's alterations and dry-cleaning store, where he mostly goes unnoticed.  While being one of the few Asian kids at school gives him some unwelcome attention. But when Kevin's class plans a trip to Thrill Planet, a spectacular theme park, he might have a chance to turn his life around.

Mexikid by Pedro Martin: A lively, funny, and transporting middle grade graphic novel about family, Mexican history, and a life-changing family road trip.

Puzzled by Pan Cooke: Growing up with undiagnosed OCD sure isn't easy, and here Pan Cooke shares his own experiences with that condition in a graphic-novel memoir that is as funny as it is powerfully candid and openhearted. Pan Cooke is ten years old when anxious thoughts begin to take over his brain like pieces of an impossible puzzle.

Author quote of the week:

"I believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for building empathy and understanding between people,"- Raina Telegmeier, author of Smile.
