Principal Message

What a great week at MHS! Thank you to our grade six students, teachers and parents/guardians for your overwhelming support, generosity and commitment to being citizens in action.  The Take Action Fair put on by our grade six community was absolutely fantastic! There are so many amazing charities represented and who will benefit for the work and commitment of our students and families.

Spring Break awaits and I hope that puts a smile on the faces of staff and students who deserve a much-needed reset and a chance to get outside and enjoy our community and surrounding environs.

Hopefully, the CUPE Labour Action we be resolved this week.  We look forward to welcoming back an amazing team of facility operators and cleaners who do a great job keeping our school clean and welcoming.

Have a wonderful Spring Break and thank you for your continued support of staff and students.

Sincerely,

Mr. Martin

Lunch Club News

Our paper airplane club is cruising along and will continue with it’s present trajectory for another week.   Students are shown a new model aircraft to recreate each week.  To date we have made Starships, Kite Planes, Wide Wing Gliders, Megamoths and the A-4 Skyhawk (our most difficult plane yet).  It’s not too late to join!

The grade breakdown for lunch club is as follows, and takes place during the second half of lunchbreak:

  • Mondays:  Grades 5
  • Tuesdays: Grade 6
  • Wednesdays: Grade 4
  • Thursdays:  Grades 7-9

Highlight of the Week

We will continue to highlight our fantasy novels for one more week.  We have saved the best for last, as we celebrate the magical and awe-inspiring world of dragons!   A remake of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ will be coming to theatres in June, and we have some great titles to prepare the students for the dragon excitement that’s on its way.

The Earth Dragons series by Chris D’Lacey

How To Train Your Dragon by Crissida Cowell

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

The Fire Within by Chris D’Lacey

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda (recommended for grades 7 & up)

The Dragon’s Promise by Elizabeth Lim (recommended for grades 7 & up)

Talon by Julie Kagawa (recommended for grades 8 & 9)

Author Quote of the Week

“There are three magical powers that reading brings out in children – intelligence, creativity and empathy. Intelligence is the words. Creativity, often through illustration, is the jumping off point for them to create their own worlds. And the empathy is inside a child's head – they are that hero with magic powers.”- Cressida Cowell, author of How to Train Your Dragon
