Principal’s Message

Dear MHS Families

Thank you to our coaches, Mr. Irvine, Athletic Director, and to our parents and student players for an exciting volleyball tournament on February 21-22. Our girls' team placed first and our boys' team came in with a second-place finish.  Super exciting games and lots of enthusiasm at the school!  Congratulations to our coaches and players.

We have moved our parent-teacher conferences scheduled for March 20 and 21 fully online (Microsoft Teams) in response to current labour action. For those who prefer in-person conferences, and to our elementary students who were hoping to have student-led conferences, we thank you for your understanding.  After we finish the volleyball season next week, our after-school athletics and after school programs will be on hold until further notice.  Our regular day programming continues uninterrupted.

Our second semester is going very well with lots of interesting and engaging projects underway and as always, we continue working with so many nice students.  In the past few weeks, we have spent some time and thought toward Black History Month, the celebration of Ramadan, and look forward to recognizing the upcoming Solstice and Holi and Easter.

We look forward to connecting with you virtually at parent conferences and wish you all a wonderful upcoming Spring Break.

Sincerely yours,

Mr. Martin

Lunch Club News

Our paper airplane club has taken flight.   Students will be shown a new model aircraft to recreate each week, or they can instead try out their own knowledge of aerodynamics and engineer their own paper plane.   Each lunch break club will end with a trial run in the flight zone.

The grade breakdown for lunch club is as follows, and takes place during the second half of lunchbreak:

Mondays:  Grades 5

Tuesdays: Grade 6

Wednesdays: Grade 4

Thursdays:  Grades 7-9

Highlight of the Week

March, for some, is about leprechauns and the luck of the Irish.  So, it’s the perfect time to escape into the fantasy genre.  Students can delve into worlds where dragons and magic exists, or enjoy a book from our new Mythology section where readers who love Percy Jackson novels can explore other page-turning titles.

Here is one of the exciting new titles in our fantasy collection…

Olivetti by Allie Millington:  Introducing Olivetti, the typewriter who spills all about how typewriters communicate, store memories, loathe books, and cherish their humans. Olivetti has long been owned by Beatrice, but when she suddenly goes missing, it's up to Olivetti and Beatrice's son Earnest to solve the mystery of her disappearance.

Author quote of the week

“We read to know we are not alone” - C.S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia.
