Principal’s Message

The Kids are Growing!

We always make sure students have something to eat if they need a lunch or a snack at school, but the number of requests has tripled since Spring Break, with many students eating their lunch at nutrition break and being hungry again by lunch.  Please talk with your child and up the quantity from home if this applies to them.   Thank you so much!

A reminder that students are not allowed to bring un-popped microwave popcorn as it creates a fire hazard in the microwaves.  We also request students do not bring microwave Kraft Dinner (KD) as the lengthy cook time prevents other students from accessing the microwaves.

Take Action Fair

We want to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to our Grade 6 students, parents/guardians, teachers and supporters of the Grade 6 Take Action Fair.  This project is rich in real-world learning and brought in close to $9000 in support of local charities!!

We are so proud of our Grade 6 students who put time, energy and spirit to help others less fortunate.  Thank you, parents, for your generosity, especially parents in grade six, for your time and support of this learning activity.

Reminders for Parents

School Bus Zones

We are sending out a reminder to parents in regards to our school bus zones.  Please refrain from parking in the school bus zones during drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.  We have had instances where our buses are blocked in and can’t leave at their designated times.

Staff Parking Lot

Please refrain from dropping off and picking up students in the staff parking lot unless required due to a physical need.  We have students walking through our parking lot at various times throughout the day and having vehicles moving in the parking lot becomes a safety issue.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Our Students Are Voting!

We’re excited to share that our students at MHS will be taking part in Student Vote Canada on Monday, April 28. This parallel election gives students a chance to learn about the candidates in our electoral district, think about the issues that matter to them, and cast a ballot — just like the adults will in the real election. It’s a great way to practice being active and informed citizens, and we hope it sparks some good conversation at home. Ask them who they voted for — and why!

Thanks for supporting this hands-on learning experience.

MHS Open House

Please find the attachment below that contains details pertaining to the Open House taking place at McKenzie Highlands School on Thursday, May 1, from 6pm to 7:30pm.

Grade 9 Market Project

The grade 9 Market on April 17 was a huge hit! The grade 9 students developed successful business plans and executed them wonderfully. The students raised a little under $10,000 dollars which will go towards farewell to reduce the cost for all grade 9 students.  A sincere thank you to our school community for supporting this event and a special nod of gratitude to grade 9 parents/guardians who went above and beyond in every way!

Innovation, entrepreneurialism, applied math and social studies at its finest.  Way to go, grade 9!

Lunch Club News

Next week students who will be performing poetry during our open house poetry slam, are welcome to come into the LC any day at lunch break to practice.   Other students can also come in to play board games with their friends on their grade day.

The grade breakdown for lunch club is as follows, and takes place during the second half of lunch break:

Mondays: Grades 5

Tuesdays: Grade 6

Wednesdays: Grade 4

Thursdays: Grades 7-9

It's Poetry Month!  Our poetry café will be up and running next week in the Learning Commons.  Students will be reciting poetry during the open house, and the grade 5 students will be using our space to perform their own poetic creations to their classmates.   We will also have a magnetic poetry board up for students to use when their poetic creative energy hits.

Poet Quote of the Week
